What to do on a rainy day in Malta!

1 February 2020

Although Malta has the highest amount of sunshine in Europe (300 days!), occasionally you can get caught out by a spring shower. You may be wondering how you can spend the day should you open the curtains to grey skies and rain. Fear not! Malta has plenty to offer in terms of sights and banishing those winter blues- no umbrella required!

Here are four family-friendly downpour destinations to consider once you have booked your  flights to Luqa !

Get up close with science at Esplora

Malta’s exceptional interactive science centre makes for an excellent family day out whatever the weather! You can find Esplora in the stunning town of Kalkara.

The museum is highly interactive and great for all ages! Everyone is encouraged to explore, think and imagine by touching, feeling and using the exhibits in a hands-on, body-on, mind-on approach that we are not used to seeing in such venues. Visitors can head to the Planetarium building which offers the Universe exhibition as well as the Planetarium shows on a giant dome screen. Don’t miss the activity centre,  which features regular science shows and workshops. Esplora also boasts a vast outdoor area and many exhibits, a historical exhibition and truly wonderful views of Valletta and the Grand Harbour!

Play Palazzo Falson’s Augmented Reality Game

Situated in Mdina, Palazzo Falson is the first museum in Malta to introduce an entertaining AR game using innovative technology in the museum. The AR game is also an absolute first providing a Maltese and English narrative, and it is also text-based for the benefit of the hearing impaired community.

Secrets of Palazzo Falson can be downloaded for free on a smartphone or tablet upon purchase of a ticket at Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum in Mdina. The game is suitable for ages 12+. Use of own headphones is recommended. The entrance ticket also entitles the visitor to tour the museum and is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm (last entry at 4:00 pm).

Shop, shop and shop at Tigne Point

When the dark clouds begin to loom, one place you can certainly run for cover to avoid the downpour is Tigne Point. As Malta’s largest shopping mall, there’s everything you could require here under one roof. Spend the day perusing the shops, or head to the salon for a last-minute haircut. There’s plenty of top international brands here, as well as local names and even a children’s play area on the lower floors. After shopping, make time for a coffee pit stop at many of the eateries.- Just ensure you leave enough space for all your new purchases and check Air Malta’s baggage allowances! Take a look here.

Discover the underwater world at the Aquarium

Located in Qawra, Malta’s National Aquarium provides a great way to while away the day if the skies look gloomy. The site is home to over 130 different species of fish and marine life spread across many tanks.  The Aquarium is split into five primary zones, each one offering visitors insight into different sea life and species. Zone 1 recreates Malta’s western shoreline and submarine; Zone 2 showcases the stunning Valletta Harbour; Zone 3 displays beautiful species from the Tropical Oceans; Zone 4 steps back in time to the Roman Times with an ancient ‘ghost shipwreck’; and Zone 5 presents incredible scenes from Gozo and Comino (including the now fallen Azure Window!). There’s also a recently opened zone full of reptiles and amphibians for you to discover!

This is just a handful of some of the ways to spend a rainy day, there are many additional wonderful museums, palaces and cafes! There really is so much to see and do on the Maltese Islands, whatever the weather. Spend your holidays in Malta !
