All about the Valletta International Baroque Festival 2019

A new year is nearly upon us and if you are planning your holidays in Malta, consider visiting after Christmas for a bit of post-festive fun. This upcoming January will bring the 7th edition of the amazing Valletta International Baroque Festival which will take place from the 11th to 26th of January 2019 and it is expected to bring together some of the finest Baroque artists and musicians of the moment. So, save the date to join the spectacular scenes and enjoy a unique experience in the beautiful Maltese capital of Valletta.

About Valletta International Baroque Festival

Valletta is known as the Baroque Capital City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its historic churches, palaces and museums. The Festival aims to provide exceptional shows in some of the most famous Baroque venues of the city, namely Teatru Manoel, St. John’s Co-Cathedral and the Archaeology Museum. Local and international audiences are also entertained in other picturesque Baroque backdrops beyond the capital, including ones in Mdina, Vittoriosa, Senglea and Rabat, amongst others.

What to expect from the 7th edition

Every year the Valletta International Baroque Festival offers a rich and diverse programme with performers ready to passionately greet every visitor. 


This edition, the festival will start on the evening of January 11th with ‘Extravaganzas for Mandolin’. This opening will bring together sounds from Vivaldi, Bach and Zinzadse performed by great artists such as Andrés Gabetta and Avi Avital at Teatru Manoel. The next day, head to Oratory of the Crucifix to attend the marvellous show ‘The Heart of Sensibility’ and later on to Teatru Manoel for the amazing sounds of ‘Vivaldi and Telemann Concertos’. 

But this is just the start as more shows are scheduled for the subsequent two weeks. Sunday, January 13th starts with ‘The Seasons’ performed by PRISMA at Mdina Cathedral, followed by ‘Vivica Genaux is Farinelli’ at Teatru Manoel. Other highlights include the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra performing ‘Inspired by Baroque’ at the Teatru Manoel on Tuesday, January 15th as well as the unique ‘Bach-St Matthew Passion BWM 244’ organised on Tuesday, January 22nd at the stunning St. John’s Co-Cathedral.

Whilst every day will be filled with great events for everyone, the closing of this festival will host yet another round of unmissable shows. You wouldn’t want to miss ‘Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1, BWV 846 -869’ on the January 25th, performed by the amazing Paul Gulda and Harpischord at The Archaeology Museum. 

Last but certainly not least, on Saturday January 26th, you will be able to enjoy ‘Path of Love – Masa’r Hubb’, another great performance by Paul Gulda and followed up by ‘The Six Brandenburg Concertos’. This event performed by Les Passions de l’Âme and Meret Luthi will close this wonderful 7th edition with 6 sonnets played emotionally at Teatru Manoel.
