What is the Valletta Green Festival?

The Valletta Green Festival is a great opportunity to bring the colourful elements of flora and foliage into the urban expanse of Valletta and this year’s event is special, not just because of V18, but also because it will be commemorating the capitals 450th anniversary.

The festival is one of the years most eagerly awaited events which sees the Pjazza San Gorg, one of the largest open spaces in Valletta, totally transformed into a huge floral carpet comprising of some 80,000 potted plants. The festival is held over the course of a weekend and is an annual event that sees impressive growth (no pun intended) year on year.

Some Unique Attractions

One of the main attractions of the 2018 event will be the cloistered monastery of St Catherine and the Archbishop’s Palace which will be open to the public for the first time in over 400 years.
Previous editions of the festival have seen the Pjazza filled with flowers and plants as a part of a 400sp installation. The infioriata is created by combining seasonal flowers in white, pink, purple, yellow, and red, to create a large “carpet” affect.

The aim of the infioriata is to motivate residents of the country to create their very own green areas in their towns and villages. Take for example roof gardens- easy to set up and maintain, they help to lower the temperatures in the long summer months, as well as to make the urban areas that they inhabit, more attractive.

The event is organised in conjunction with the Ministry for Sustainable Development, The Environment and Climate change, as well the Environmental Landscaping Consortium, the Parks Department, Tree 4 u, and WasteServ Malta.
