Experience Valletta’s Archaeology Museum as Never Before this Valentine’s Day

This Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating love like they used to in the good ol’ days. The renowned Maltese tenor Nico Darmanin will be performing swing, jazz and big-band classics inside the breathtaking Gran Salon, at Malta’s National Archaeology Museum.

With an illustrious career that has seen him working at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden alongside some of the greatest artists in the world of opera, Nico’s upcoming concert promises to be truly Unforgettable.

Here, we caught up with Nico, ahead of this special one-weekend only performance, taking place on 14, 15 and 16 February.

Tell us, how did your passion for music and singing develop?

I think I was fortunate to come to this world with a good ear. I remember doing my School of Music entry tests in Valletta at a very, very young age and people seemed to be surprised at how musically precise I could be. My passion for music grew stronger and stronger as I studied piano, but I was always interested in composing my own little tunes. In my late teens, I discovered that singing felt like a release from my soul. It gave me the opportunity to play with words and music at the same time.

What activities do you enjoy during your free time?

In summer, I scuba dive as much as I can – and Malta is the ideal destination for that. It's a completely different world down there, which I have always been fascinated by. I believe it's important to find things you are interested in to keep your mind fresh. I’m also passionate about golfing, which I enjoy during the spring. The views and fresh air on a golf course revitalises the soul. In winter, I love to ski. I feel like a kid again when I see the mountains and snow.

What are your favourite places to visit in Malta?

Għajn Tuffieħa must rank as my favourite. It's the place that I think about the most wherever I am in the world, and the place I speak about the most to people who have not yet been to Malta. One can really feel linked to something greater than himself, walking along the top cliffside of the bay. For me it's a place to zen and reset. I mostly love the Northern parts of the Islands, the rustic and untouched parts, where I feel I am connected to the land.

Do you have a favourite performance piece?

With every new opera I do, I end up deciding it's my best experience yet. As an artist, I want to evolve and keep growing till my last breath. In June 2018, I had the opportunity to work on a world debut piece by Donizetti, called 'L' Ange de Nisida', which was recorded by Opera Rara. I got to work with Sir Mark Elder on the piece for the first two weeks as it was being reconstructed. I loved every second of it and I felt truly fortunate and excited every minute we were in rehearsals!

What inspired the name of your upcoming concert ‘Unforgettable’?

One of the very first things I did when we started discussing the project was compile a list of songs, which I thought would be great to perform. The one constant song that was always on there was 'Unforgettable' by Nat King Cole. We were all having a meeting one day and a light bulb came on to set Unforgettable as the title of the event and we all loved it, so it stuck!

What are you most looking forward to about performing at the Archaeology Museum in Malta?

I'm looking forward to singing with the Big Band Brothers and Jasmine Abela. I'm super excited to get out of my comfort zone and get into this new character on stage. The Gran Salon is exactly the type of place these concert would take place in, back in the golden age of music! I always have that scene from 'The Notebook' movie in mind. What’s there not to be excited about?

Unforgettable – A Concert by Nico Darmanin will take place at 8pm on 14, 15 and 16 February 2019 at the National Museum of Archaeology, Valletta. Tickets are available from www.ticketline.com.mt
