Meet Red Electrick- One of Malta’s hottest bands right now

8 October 2018

What Malta lacks in size, it surely makes up for it in entertainment. From a vibrant nightlife to stellar theatrical performances to a diverse music scene, Malta has got something to suit all tastes.

Today, we introduce you to Red Electrick (aka REK), a local pop-rock band, made up of five talented individuals, whose songs are loved by many and whose gigs are always jam-packed (there’s a reason for that!). Having been on top of Malta’s music scene for the past ten years, Red Electrick has achieved incredible success locally.

If you’re soon spending your holidays in Malta and are looking to get acquainted with one of Malta’s hottest bands right now, this one’s for you!

When was the band formed? What inspired you to make music together?

The band was formed in 2008. It was quite an easy formation and we got together quite naturally. We all attended the same school and we just grew up playing music together, for example, during school breaks and concerts. The inspiration was simply the love we all had towards music.

How did the band’s name originate?

One of our friends at the time had suggested “Electric” because we were quite a heavy rock band in the beginning, but funnily enough, her suggestion was “Peach Electric”. We then decided to use “Red” for no particular reason, but nowadays we can say that it represents the main color of our national flag. The “k” was added after “Electric” because we wanted to give a twist to our name. It seemed like a good idea at the time – we were 19!

What genre of music do you consider your work to be?

Our sound evolves quite a lot, sometimes even within the same album or live gig we are working on at that given moment. We would say that generally though we are inclined to writing pop/rock/acoustic songs with band arrangements and sounds.

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?

It depends on the frame of mind we are in. Our third album, “Inside You”, was lyrically on the thoughtful side, and some have even called it a moody/melancholic album lyrically. It depicted our frame of mind at that point – 26-year-olds still trying to find life’s meaning.

Nowadays, we are writing less symbolically and more straight to the point with “everyday” life topics which people can relate to. We feel that the new songs are more positive, and we are really happy and excited with what we are doing. But we guess all artists feel like their best work is their latest, and that is actually the beauty of it.

Describe each band member in one word.

Joe – The hard-worker
Pete – The perfectionist
Ivan – The joker
Aleandro- The prodigy
Robert – The machine

Where have you performed? What was your favourite venue?

Over the past ten years? Quite a lot! Locally – Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta is our favourite.

What is your favourite song to perform as a band?

“G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S”. And right now, we are buzzing to a new song with a working title “Manchester 2”.  It will be one of the songs on our fourth album.

What are your rehearsals generally like?

When we are working on a big show, we go into quite a lot of detail with the show’s production. Our shows are planned out well and we feel it’s a big part of why people like coming. We don’t just play the songs as they were recorded; we challenge the arrangements, create dramatic moments and more. People love it, we love it.

We’ve all been to many concerts of our favourite artists and we just get inspired by how they tackle their live shows. This creates a goal within us to try and achieve that level of awesomeness with a fraction of the budgets.

Briefly describe the process that goes behind writing a new song.

There isn’t one formula. However, for the past ten months, we have been writing as a team and it is actually the best feeling in the world. When all members feel like they are part of the songwriting process, it just creates a feeling of everyone owning the songs. We are also pushing each other to write as some members are naturally more inclined to being writers, but we believe all of us have it in us, so we push each other. This is what being in a band is all about.

What has been your biggest achievement as a band?

Being active, busy and relevant for over ten years now.

What has been your biggest challenge as a band?

When Matt (our previous singer) left, we were quite devastated. The option to stop writing and performing as Red Electrick was on the table, of course, because the singer plays a huge role in a band.

However, people were genuinely interested in Joe with REK and it worked out amazingly well. He is a great guy, singer and songwriter, and people saw it and accepted the “new” REK. We guess in life, the universe has a way of rewarding you when your intentions are good – in our case, dedication to making the best music possible and dedication to creating a team in which everyone is enjoying the process and working hard.

What are Red Electrick’s upcoming plans?

Too many to mention and we like to plan how to announce things. However, this coming Saturday, 13th October, we’ll be having our annual concert at Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Valletta and our fourth album will also be coming up next year!
