Take a trip back in time to an era of noble kings and lords, to a time where gallant knights roamed the land practising chivalry and honour in their purest forms. Welcome to Medieval Mdina, a festival that pays homage to this epic period of history. If you’re a history buff or simply looking for a unique, family-friendly event, then there’s no better time to plan your holiday in Malta!
This year’s edition of Medieval Mdina will take place on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th April. Down through the years, it has developed a reputation both nationally and internationally with people travelling far and wide to experience it for themselves and it’s easy to see why. The setting in the ancient walled city of Mdina offers a fantastically authentic back-drop for the event with many of the archaic structures actually originating from the Medieval period.
So what can you expect to find during this two-day celebration? There’s quite a lot in store for you to look forward to, the old capital really goes all out for this festival. The narrow streets and open squares of Mdina will come to life with the hustle and bustle of very convincing re-enactments of what the city would have been like during the late-Medieval period. On every corner you can expect to find people dressed in traditional Medieval garb, going about daily activities from this time in history. Keeping in line with Medieval times, a town crier will be passing on the latest news to the masses, soldiers will be practising their archery.
Grab a drink at the traditional medieval tavern or sink your teeth into some delicious food at the Medieval kitchen. A lot of the local restaurants will also be offering a selection of medieval food for you to try too. Once you've literally got a taste for this bygone time and you're full of some great hearty food, why not take a stroll through the beautiful city? You'll find a lot to keep you entertained. Why not take in a magic show or enjoy some live musical performances? Perhaps you'd like to see some talented falconers performing with their feathered companions, or see an amazing flag throwing show? During this era, battles defined the lay of the land so be on your guard for epic skirmishes and fights that will break out without warning throughout the two days.
Throughout the festival, all the tourist attractions in the city will extend their opening hours and offer a reduced rate, there really is no better time to learn about the cultural heritage that defined this period in Maltese history.
