6 March 2020

Michelin have recognised Malta as a worthy world-class foodie destination and have announced the restaurants on the islands that will join the 32 countries already included in the famous Michelin guide. If you've booked your flights to Malta, read on to discover the Michelin Star restaurants in Malta!

Who are Michelin?

Established in the late 19th century, Michelin has maintained its benchmark of listing international food for more than 120 years, recognising some of the most excellent cuisines in the world. Today Michelin remains the most authoritative guide for restaurants globally.

Why Malta?

Situated in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta is rapidly earning a fantastic reputation as a culinary hotspot that offers an array of dishes influenced by the many civilisations that made the Maltese archipelago their home. In a nod to embrace the legacy and diverse culinary history of these Islands, the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) has been championing local, sustainable gastronomy that tips its hat to traditional methods within the context of a contemporary and lively restaurant scene.

And the winners are..

Without further ado, you’re probably wondering which restaurants made the grade! (Drum roll..) The winners of the first stars to be awarded in Malta are:

This is the first year the stamp of fine dining quality features restaurants across the islands of Malta and Gozo – and includes three other Bib Gourmand restaurants: Terrone in Marsaxlokk, Commanda in Mellieha and Rubino in Valletta.

How do they earn a star?

When considering a restaurant for a potential star award, Michelin inspectors lookout for five key criteria: the quality of the products featured in the meal; the mastery of the culinary technique displayed throughout; the harmony of flavours; the personality of the chef expressed in the cuisine; and consistency over time. An inspector will visit a restaurant multiple times during a year to validate consistency—consistency up and down the menu and consistency over time.

International Director of the Michelin guides Gwendal Pullennec expressed his excitement to launch the first Maltese section, saying, ‘The Maltese culinary scene has talents that are worthy of discovery by foodies from around the world. In the centre of the Mediterranean, Malta is a desirable cultural destination with a unique cuisine style which beautifully combines European influences and local traditions.”

The Chairman of the Malta Tourism Authority, Dr Gavin Gulia, added: ‘The MTA welcomes this first edition of the Malta Michelin Guide which signifies a coming of age of our quality restaurants. Eating out is a major component of any holiday experience, and with the growing interest in all things related to food, it is becoming increasingly important for Malta to maintain a high standard in its gastronomic offer. Having the first Michelin star establishments on the island is definitely a step in the right direction.”

So if you are planning a holiday to Malta and wondering what food awaits- be sure to check out these restaurants along with plenty of traditional Maltese cuisine!
