Year after year, the festival welcomes a variety of globally acclaimed artists to perform in the capital city Valletta, with previous festivals having hosted world-class jazz acts such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and Brad Mehldau. With no shortage of mesmerising headlining sets and fringe events staged under Malta’s glittery night sky, the Malta International Jazz Festival has become a firm favourite on the local cultural events calendar.

The Best in Local and International Jazz

The top picks for this year’s programme include one of the world’s most renowned saxophone players Kenny Garrett, as well as Jazzmeia Horn- a pivotal jazz vocalist, who earned a Grammy Award last year. Since winning the Thelonious Monk Competition in 2015, Jazzmeia has continued to rise, along with her reputation as an artist with an assured maturity and vocal confidence far beyond her years

Look out for Ozmosys, starring legendary jazz drummer Omar Hakim, one of the most celebrated and diverse Jazz drummers who has collaborated with Miles Davis, Dire Straits, Daft Punk and David Bowie. For the second time, Chucho Valdés will be making an appearance – the Cuban Jazz Legend and six-time Grammy Award Winner. Valdés is regarded as the most influential figure in modern Afro-Cuban jazz, who you can catch on the Main Stage at Ta’ Liesse in Valletta.

From the local scene, The Malta Concert Orchestra’s Big Band together with Joe Cutajar will be performing at Pjazza Teatru Rjal on Thursday 18th July. Other local acts to look out for are William Smith Trio and jazz veteran Dominic Galea, both performing at Ta’ Liesse.

According to Festivals director Annabelle Stivala, this year’s festival will not only be celebrating music and musicians but also spaces and heritage. For this reason, apart from Valletta, the Malta Jazz Festival will also explore three new spaces brimming with historical and cultural significance: The Palazzo Vilhena courtyard in Mdina, The Notre Dame Gate in Vittoriosa (one of The Three Cities) and Triton Square in Valletta.

Learn from the Masters!

This year’s festival will also see free master classes, giving you the chance to get hands-on experience with the instruments and get involved with wisdom from the jazz masters themselves. All masterclasses will be held at Offbeat, Merchant Street, Valletta. It’s worth noting, due to the limited number of places, reservations are required in advance.

July is an exciting time to visit the Maltese islands; after a day exploring the dreamy crystal-clear beaches around Malta, Gozo and Comino, why not add the Malta Jazz Festival 2019 to your itinerary for the perfect evening in the capital?
