The event has become a regular feature in the Maltese calendar of cultural events, and is eagerly anticipated by thousands of music fans every year. There’s more than just hymns and traditional choirs to enjoy though, as the diverse range of acts on offer span multiple different genres. With over 800 international choristers travelling from as far afield as Russia, Poland, Spain and China, the audience are in for a varied and diverse treat!

What is it all about?

The festival is all about enjoyment and the sharing of beautiful music and voices, there is however, a competitive element to it too. The festival runs for four days and offers choirs and spectators a varied programme across several local venues. There are also an abundance of workshops and masterclasses available for all to take part in. These educational initiatives focus particularly on encouraging the younger generations to enjoy singing, and partaking in a choir.

Who organises it?

A joint venture between the Malta Tourism Authority and The Ministry for Tourism, the Malta International Choir Festival aims to bring beautiful vocals to the masses. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Maltese Islands, you really couldn’t hope for a better venue for such a musical treat.

Malta is a very religious, Catholic country and with over 370 churches on the tiny archipelago, it’s easy to see how the choral scene and tradition has thrived. The festival itself has been held at regular intervals since 1988 and during that time it has hosted over 220 choirs from all over the world. The festival keeps growing in size year on year, with each subsequent event outshining the one before, this years is eagerly anticipated!

The organisers of the event try to keep the locations of each performance different to the usual sort of setting. This is done to provide choristers with a more emotionally charged and beautiful ambiance. Previous locations include the Mediterranean Conference Centre and the historic St Johns Co-Cathedral but year on year, they are always on the lookout for new and exciting locations.
