A pretty little town nestled in the Ore Mountains, Seiffen is the Christmas craft capital of Germany. Yes, those beautiful handcrafted wooden toys and decorations that fill Christmas market stands (think ‘The Nutcracker’) have had their roots in Seiffen since the late 1800s!

On a day trip to Seiffen from Leipzig (approximately 145km away), you will get the opportunity to see talented wood carvers create these intricate toys and the passion that goes into the craft. Why not take a few with you as souvenirs, to remember your day trip to Seiffen for years to come?  Seiffen isn’t just famed for toy making, should you visit in the winter months, you will find it is also a charming snowy winter wonderland!

There’s no denying some of the world’s most beautiful fairy-tale castles are tucked away in the German countryside. Roughly one hour and a half away from Leipzig, Moritzburg Castle is well worth a visit. The castle sits on an artificial island and has four large round towers- it really is a unique spectacle! Built in the 1500s as a hunting lodge, this castle will surely not disappoint architecture lovers as its interior is just as impressive as its exterior. Gold gilding, precious tapestries and Baroque antiques fill the castle.

The Colditz story remains to this day one of the most remarkable and famous chapters in the history of World War Two. At the time, Colditz served as a notorious prisoner-of-war camp for Allied officers who had repeatedly escaped from other camps. Despite this castle’s 7-foot thick walls and steep cliffs, over 300 escape attempts were still committed, some of which were incredibly ingenious and the inspiration for many books and films. These days, a museum is located in the castle where you can browse an interesting collection of the tools which prisoners used to escape. History buffs cannot miss this day trip less than an hour away from Leipzig!
