6 September 2019

Will you be visiting Lyon for the first time ever? If you’re wondering what this French pearl has in store for you, be prepared to embrace a wealth of history, world-class cuisine and incredible architecture.  After a quick stroll through this fascinating city which presents a fusion of old meets new, you'll soon understand why so many refer to Lyon as "Little Paris". Here are our suggestions on the top things to do when in Lyon, France!

1. Take a boat trip on the Saône

The heart of Lyon, named the Presqu'île, is surrounded by two beautiful rivers with four riverbanks. A one-hour narrated sightseeing trip along the Saône River provides you with the chance to enjoy incredible architectural landscapes from the water.

2. Snap a selfie at the Flower Tree

Lyon is a treasure trove of fantastic sculptures and monuments, but one of our favourite installations has to be the colourful Flower Tree.  You can readily find it between the Rhône River and the dancing fountains on Place Antonin Poncet. Originally planned as a temporary art installation, the locals loved it so much it became a permanent fixture!

3. Eat at a Bouchon

If you are strolling around the older parts of Lyon, keep your eyes peeled for a Bouchon. These traditional family-run eateries are unique to the city. There's plenty to be found along the streets of Vieux Lyon and also on the Rue des Marronniers on the Presqu'île. They date back to the era when passing silk traders used to stop at these inns to groom their horses and fill their stomachs. These eateries mostly specialise in meat dishes.

4. Try some Voisin chocolates

These mouth-watering artisanal chocolates have been made locally in a factory in Lyon since 1897. With so many options on offer, these iconic green wrapped chocs are available in 30 shops throughout the city. The question is, will they make it home?

5. Explore the Parc de la Tête d'Or

Situated on the banks of the River Saône, just North of the city centre, the Park de la Tête d'Or is one of the biggest urban public parks in France. Besides the many paths that wind around the park, offering plenty of jogging and cycling tracks, there's also a botanical garden and zoo, both with free entry!

6. Rummage your way through Les Puces du Canal

If you love a bargain or consider yourself a vintage goods’ aficionado, certainly meander around this enormous flea market on the outskirts of Lyon. Les Puces du Canal (the Canal Flea Market) is held 3 times a week in Villeurbanne, 5 km North-East of the city centre. It is home to around 400 stalls, where you can find an eclectic choice of wares, from vintage clothing, musical paraphernalia and so much more!

7. Walk up Fourvière Hill

It's genuinely worth trekking to the top of Fourvière Hill to enjoy the best views of Lyon. Once up there, you can also visit the marvellous 19th-century Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, one of the main landmarks of the city. If you don't fancy the uphill trek- you'll be glad to hear there's also a funicular!
