Beach-side Activities You Can Still Enjoy in Winter in Malta

19 January 2018

You might think that the winter months are not the perfect time to visit the beach, but if you are a planning on booking flights to Malta, you will soon discover that you are wrong.

Malta enjoys short, mild winters with temperatures rarely dropping below 12 degrees and blue skies and sunshine are a regular occurrence. This means that you can still enjoy the island’s glorious coastline and beaches during your stay. There is a wealth of beach-side activities to take part in, and these are a couple of suggestions.

Paddle boarding

Paddle boarding is a super way to keep fit, and to explore the dramatic coast of the Maltese Islands. As long as the weather remains calm, there are lots of paddle boarding schools that will happily take you out and about during the winter months. You can choose from lessons or just go on a tour if you are feeling confident. Explore Malta’s hidden coves, majestic rock formations, and see a perspective of the island that many do not get to see.

Trekking

Winter is a perfect time to get out and about exploring the countryside. There is no shortage of trails and routes for you to trek along that give you a bird’s eye of the island’s beaches and coast. Visit Hagar Qim near Qrendi and take in the beautiful view comprising of the island of Filfla and the ocean beyond. You can explore the cliffs surrounding Golden Bay, or even hop over to Gozo and hike around the hills surrounding Ramla Bay which include the legendary Calypso’s Cave.

Swimming

Yes, you can swim in Malta during the winter months, but you must exercise some extra caution as there are no lifeguards present during this time. Don’t go in the sea if it is rough, and stick close to the shoreline. You will see quite a few locals braving the waters in Sliema and Marsaskala. You can also find a couple of dive schools that operate all year round and you can try your hand at scuba diving, snorkelling, or freediving - wetsuit optional!

Kayaking

Kayaking or canoeing is a great way to spend a day. Again, make sure there isn’t force 8 gales before you attempt to take to the waves, but if the sun is shining and the sea is calm, it is a great way to explore the coast. Take lessons, or go out exploring with an instructor, the choice is yours!

These are just a couple of things you can do by the sea-side during the winter months in Malta, but with over 300 days of sunshine every year, you can do them all year round as well!
