Gardens in Valletta

Providing peace and tranquillity, Valletta has a number of gardens that lure you away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Every great city must have great gardens. Valletta is no exception.

What sets these gardens apart from others is the fact that each of the main gardens has stunning views.

Whether it’s the stunning views of the Grand Harbour from Upper Barrakka Gardens, or the expansive open-sea views from Lower Barrakka Gardens, these peaceful spots allow the weary traveller and busy city-worker alike to escape the hustle and bustle.

Upper Barrakka Gardens
These are Valletta’s most famous gardens, and for good reason. The gardens boast some of the most panoramic views of the Grand Harbour. Perched atop the bastion of St Peter and St Paul, visitors can relax on the benches amongst the greenery, or, in the more windswept areas, between the arches. The latter offer the best views. The gardens are also home to some notable works of art, including a particularly charming bronze entitled Les Gavroches by notable Maltese Sculptor Antonio Sciortino.

Lower Barrakka Gardens
Although less popular than the Upper Barrakka Gardens, the Lower Barrakka Gardens offer a more peaceful respite for the visitor. Located on the Eastern side of the city, the gardens feature a Neoclassical monument to Sir Alexander Ball, the first, and most loved of British Governors.

Hastings Garden
This peaceful garden was built in honour of Lord Hastings, the second Governor of Malta. It features some Neoclassical design, including a monument dedicated to Lord Hastings. The Gardens are known for the majestic views of the harbour of Marsamxett. You can also see the yacht marina in Msida and Manoel Island.
