Learning History at the Mdina Dungeons and the Malta Experience

Relive Maltese history with your family.

Malta’s history is described by many as rich and long and they’re not wrong! Attractions like the Mdina Dungeons and the Malta Experience offer the public a fully immersive journey into the past where visitors are thrown into a time warp. Who ever said learning about history had to be boring?

For a dose of horror mixed in with history, we suggest the Mdina Dungeons. Relish the sensation of jumping out of your skin as you walk through this haunted house/museum hybrid. Providing a thorough history lesson with a twist, the Mdina Dungeon experience takes you through Maltese history, highlighting Mdina’s past in particular. Using life-size animatronic figures, the Dungeons explore Malta’s history as a colony under the rule of the Romans, Arabs, the Knights of Malta and even the French. These are times when public executions, torture, imprisonment, punishments and revolutions reigned supreme.

The Mdina Dungeons Museum will leave you and your family with unique memories, not just of your trip but also of Malta’s dark past. The Dungeons are open all day from 10am to 16.30pm, seven days a week.

If that all sounds a bit too gory for your tastes, the Malta Experience can provide an enriching and informative overview of Malta’s history with less blood and guts involved.
Spanning a 7000-year history, this audio-visual show details every aspect of Malta’s narrative, from being a haven for early settlers, to being under the thumb of heavy handed rulers, to finally being an independent republic.

Discover the history that lies within each corner of the island, from the temples, one of the oldest prehistoric settling ground; Mdina, the original capital city; and Valletta, the current capital city that holds immeasurable historic and cultural value.

The show, available in 16 languages, is open to the public daily except for Christmas day and New Year’s day. Adults watching with kids can benefit from numerous offers.

It’s up to you to decide whether you’d like to enjoy a walk though experience or sit back and relax. But then again there’s no reason why you can’t do both!
