The Cittadella

Gozo this Summer

Top of your list should be a trip to the historic Cittadella. Perched at the top of a large hill in Victoria, the Cittadella is the old, fortified capital of the island and dates back as far as the Byzantine times. The views from its parapets are indescribable in words, and its narrow winding streets, and lovingly preserved architecture has to be seen to be truly appreciated. There is plenty to see and do there such as museums, quaint local shops, and cafes and restaurants which offer spectacular views over the surrounding countryside.

Ta’ Pinu Church

Gozo this Summer

Malta and Gozo are full of churches, chapels and cathedrals but none of them quite match the presence and awesomeness of Ta’ Pinu. Situated at the top of a winding country road just outside of Gharb, it sits overlooking the rolling fields out towards the sea. Dating back to the 1500’s, it’s rumoured to be the site of several miracles over the centuries.

Xlendi

Gozo this Summer

Xlendi is a small, coastal village that is located on the south west coast of Gozo. Popular with tourists and locals alike, it’s a fantastic place to sit down, relax, take in the views and sample some delicious local cuisine. The area is also popular with divers due to the wreck of a Byzantine ship, the Shilandi, that was found in the harbour in the early 1960s. It’s a beautiful village with a pebbled beach, various sites of historical interests, and top-quality hotels and restaurants for you to rest before embarking on the next stage of your Gozitan adventure.

Ramla Bay

Gozo this Summer

Next up is the beautiful, sandy beach of Ramla. Located on the North side of the island, it’s surrounded by rich, fertile farmland and is distinctive in that its sand is a gorgeous red colour. A short path near the beach will lead you up to the famous Calypso’s Cave that overlook the entire bay. Once you return to the shore you can satiate your appetite with a bite to eat at one of the nearby kiosks. Ramla is a perfect location for a day at the beach.

Ggantija Temples

Gozo this Summer

If you’re a self-proclaimed culture vulture, a visit to the Ggantija Temples ticks all of the boxes. These temples date back to the Neolithic period, are over 5500 years ago, are older than the pyramids of Egypt. They’re also the second oldest religious structures in the world. Archaeologists believe that Ggantija was a site of importance in a fertility rite and this is evidenced by numerous statues and figurines dotted around the area. As it’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, no visit to the island would be complete without a trip to breathe in the mysterious aura of this historical place.

These are just a few suggestions of things to see and do in Gozo. It truly is a remarkable island and one that’s just as popular with the Maltese as it is with tourists. This list of things to do is by no means exhaustive, and once you arrive on its shores, you’ll wish you had more time to spare! So, book your flights to Malta now and get ready to experience a hidden wonder of the Mediterranean.
