Firstly, the weather in Malta is favourable all year round. The long hot summers are just perfect for boat trips and swimming. While during its short, mild winters the waves pick up and you can enjoy the best of the rolling waves, without having to wear a wetsuit! With multiple reef and beach breaks across the country’s waters, there are plenty of spots for you to explore and enjoy. There are no tides as such, and swell patterns can be difficult to predict due to many different winds and coastal lines from Italy, Tunisia, Libya and Greece. Situated in the north west of the island, Ghaijn Tuffieha and Golden Bay are the country’s most popular swimming spots during the summer months. As the winter draws in however, they become less crowded with bathers, and more populated with surfers. With westerly winds and swells of up to 8ft, the conditions are great for both beginners and more experienced surfers. The only drawback to these seas is the occasional appearance of jellyfish, but if you are wet-suited-up (a 3/2 should suffice in the coldest months) then you will be absolutely fine.

St Thomas Bay

Located around 15 minutes from the airport and in the south east of the island, St Thomas Bay is a favourite in the summer for swimming, BBQ’s and yachting. During the winter it offers great windsurfing and surfing conditions that are suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced. With wind directions from the south west or west, and choppy conditions from the south and southeast, waves can get really big although they do tend to be a bit slower than some of the more northern surfing spots.
