With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, what could be more romantic than a weekend in the eternal city of Rome?

Whether you are betrothed or not, there’s something utterly spellbinding about Rome, and February makes a great time to visit the city. Positvely, Air Malta flies directly to Rome Leonardo Da Vinci Fiumicino (Take a look at   flights to Rome  here). In today’s post, we are giving you a round-up of some lovely ways to fall in love with the city  -and your sweetheart while you are there!

Throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain

According to local legends, tossing one coin into the Trevi Fountain means you’ll return to The Eternal City at some point, tossing two coins means you’ll return and fall in love, and tossing three coins means you’ll return, find love, and marry. The tradition gained popularity after it was the theme of the 1954 romantic comedy Three Coins in the fountain, but did you know; it started long before the movie. How to do it? You should stand with your back to the fountain and toss a coin over your left shoulder to guarantee a return trip to Rome! Worth a try as Luck or no luck, your money goes to a good cause!

Watch the sunset from Villa Borghese

The vast park makes for a great afternoon walk, (or for rowing a boat around the small lake in the middle!) Another reason Villa Borghese is adored by many is for the view across Rome, particularly as the sun goes down. The atmosphere of the park is ethereal, with street artists and musicians providing a great soundtrack. Expect to find people dancing and the perfect photo opportunity shot! (Head towards the end of the park near Piazza Del Popolo)

Meander the streets of Trastevere

Vibrant Trastevere is a hip, bohemian area that clings to its centuries-old, working-class roots. It’s known for traditional and creative trattorias, craft beer pubs and artisan boutiques. Here you can indulge in another local favourite pastime- apertivo! Buy a drink and help yourself to plenty of food at one of the many aperitivo bars. The narrow winding streets of the medieval district are well worth a stroll.

A gelato pit stop!

Rome is full of simply exquisite Italian cuisine. Traditionally local Roman food comprises of hearty dishes such as offal, trip, oxtail soup and renowned cheeses such as pecorino. Of course, when it comes to sweets, ice cream is in abundance and you’ll find world-class gelaterias dotted around the city (There are plenty around the area of the Pantheon and Colosseum!) Nutella is a must try!

Catch sight of the Sistine Chapel

It took Michaelangelo no less than four years to complete the world-famous masterpiece, a true labour of love! The stunning frescoed ceiling can be found in the Vatican and is definitely worth a visit during your time in Rome as well as the rest of the Vatican.

There’s no denying Rome is an absolutely special capital – bustling with amazing culture, life, history and plenty of things to see, do and experience.
