things to do in Mellieha

Situated in the North of Malta, Mellieħa has several beaches, and a town brimming with life as well as popular points of interest.  The town has a lovely character giving you a taste of life in Malta as well as offering you all amenities for a comfortable holiday.

Mellieħa is situated on top of a hill, surrounded by fertile valleys, providing glorious panoramas of both sea and country, an unusual sight within the Maltese islands. It’s just a short 10-minute drive away from Ċirkewwa, where you can readily hop on the ferry and the boats to the sister islands of Gozo and Comino.

The resort town overlooks Malta’s largest sandy beach called Mellieħa Bay, also known as Għadira Bay (pronounced a-deera). But there’s more to Mellieħa than this famous beach and that’s what we’ll prove today. Once you get to Mellieħa make sure you catch the following landmarks too!

Popeye Village

Popeye Village Mellieha

Popeye Village has grown from its days as the film set of the 1980 musical production ‘Popeye’ into one of the major tourist attractions in Malta filled with many activities suitable for all ages -including boat rides to neighbouring scenic bays. Today, this Maltese fun park remains all about Popeye the Sailor and the world around this character so much so that the original set still stands.

But it has also become a sought-after location for photographers and Instagram enthusiasts alike due to its colourful and charming architecture. Popeye Village is an iconic site, and surely a must-do for your trip to the Maltese Islands.

Red Tower

Red Tower Mellieha

St. Agatha’s Tower, or as it is locally known, the Red Tower has stood guard over Mellieħa Bay since 1649. Similar to other watchtowers along the jagged Maltese coastline, it was erected as a signalling post for communication, in this case as a communication medium to Gozo. As one of the key defensive positions during the time of the Knights of St. John, it was equipped with a cannon and a garrison of 30 men. It was also later manned during both World Wars.

From the top of St Agatha’s Tower, the view is incredible. You can see right across to Gozo from one vantage point and over to Mosta and its famous domed church from the other. For a small entrance fee, visitors can climb to the top of the tower to absorb the views and also visit a small area dedicated to the history of the tower and the extensive restoration process.

Armier and Little Armier (the smaller of the two, as you may have guessed) are two nearby sandy beaches at one of Malta’s Northernmost points.

With remarkable views of the neighbouring islands of Comino and Gozo, these beaches are relatively famous but less so than Mellieħa Bay, Għajn Tuffieħa and Golden Bay. As in most bathing areas around the Maltese Islands, the water is incredibly clean and crystal clear here, and the beach is well regarded to be family-friendly.

There’s just so much to see and do around the fascinating town of Mellieħa. The question is not when you will visit it, but where you will visit first after you’ve booked your flights to Malta!
