The festive season is in full swing within the Maltese Islands, as Christmas edges closer into our periphery, so do a whole host of fantastic events. If you are lucky enough to be planning your holidays in Malta during the festive season, then there is no shortage of things to see and experience.
There are Christmas markets, crib trails, and even live nativity scenes. In Malta, you are truly spoiled for choice. However, there’s another tradition the locals enjoy, and that’s pantomime!
Year after year some of the islands best names in theatre come together to pull off some truly show-stopping performances! Here’s our round-up of this season’s family-friendly pantomime fun-times, so read on and take a look at what is on offer!
Aladdin at MFCC, Ta Qali.
MADC has been putting on fantastic dramatic productions in Malta since 1910. Now, it’s time to head to a “whole new world”. This year’s panto Aladdin, takes the audience on an enchanting journey to tell the story of the poor young Aladdin. The show is brimming with funny characters, music, dance, drama and not forgetting the famous genie!
The script is written by Alan Montanaro who returns to play the Dame, and the production features a cast of over 30 actors and dancers directed by Michael Mangion and choreographed by Francesco Nicodeme. Musical director Ryan Abela leads the show with exceptionally creative costumes designed by Isabel Warrington which complement the bespoke sets. This pantomime runs from the 23rd December – 4th January 2020, book here!
The Little Mermaid, The Panto Under the Sea at Teatru Manoel, Valletta.
It’s time to go under the see to meet Ariel and her friends, in FM Theatre Productions “The Little Mermaid”. Directed by Chris Gatt and written by Edward Mercieca this panto comes with a star-studded cast featuring Edward Mercieca as the Dame, Chiara Hyzler, Katherine Brown, Tezara Saliba, Nicole Cassar, Renato Dimech, Karen Decelis, Joe Depasquale, Antonella Mifsud, Maria Cassar, Adriel Camilleri as a fantastic all singing and dancing ensemble! If you have never been to the historic Manoel Theatre in Valletta, this panto offers the perfect excuse! You can catch the team live in action from December 22nd until January 5th 2020.
Every year pantomimes tell familiar childhood tales, bringing together the best scripts and costume designs, and not to mention plenty of laughs!. L-Imbuljuta – A Panto in the Dark, Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta.
For a panto with a difference, why not check out this year’s Panto in the dark? The plot tells the story of how a single mother with just three days left until Christmas attempts to pay her rent. Could the answer lie in Malta’s festive drink imbuljuta?
Head to Spazju Kreattiv to find out, in this multi-sensory experience in pitch darkness which will leave you at the edge-of-your-seat. Featuring plenty of laughs and plot twists, this performance stars the well-loved Chucky Bartolo, who makes his return as Dame. This show runs from the 14th-29th December, head here for more info!
