Unaccompanied Minors

Passengers who have reached their 7th birthday but not their 14th and who undertake to travel on an Air Malta flight unaccompanied by a guardian, i.e. an adult aged 16 and over, are classified as unaccompanied minors (UM). Special conditions, described hereunder, will apply and are strictly to be adhered to. The UM service can be optionally availed of for any unaccompanied passenger aged 14 years or over.

We will provide unaccompanied minors with all the care and reassurance that they require for a safe, enjoyable and comfortable flight whilst in our care. We undertake the responsibility of your loved ones from the moment they are released to our care at the airport departure check-in desk up to the moment of hand over to the meeting adult guardian on arrival at destination.

The appropriate UM form, which can be downloaded in PDF format here (PDF 1MB), must be completed by an adult guardian and presented to the booking agent or sent to our call centre.  Air Malta will require personal details concerning both the adult handing over the UM at the departure as well as that of the guardian meeting the child on arrival at destination. The accompanying adult at the departure airport must remain at the airport until the flight actually departs. In the event of a long delay, the UM will be returned to his/her care until such time that the flight is ready to leave again.

An Air Malta official will be appointed to accompany the child through security and passport control formalities. In the departure lounge we will continue to attend to the child until the UM is escorted to the aircraft and handed personally to the care of the Flight Purser.

During the flight, the Purser or any other crew member, will ensure the well being of the UM and offer assistance as required with in-flight meals and refreshments as well as the UM’s physiological needs. The Purser will ensure that the UM is neatly groomed upon arrival and that the UM has taken all personal belongings with him/her before disembarking. On arrival at destination the Purser will hand over the UM to a waiting Air Malta official, who in turn will assist the UM with luggage collection, if required, and all other airport, customs and immigration formalities. The UM will then be personally handed over to the waiting adult guardian who will in turn sign a receipt.

A non-refundable and non-transferable service fee of €70 per UM per flight segment shall be collected on booking. The UM can be booked only on a saver, flexi or business class fare. Special offer fares are not applicable for UM’s.

UM’s holding Italian passports who have not yet reached their 14th birthday and are travelling unaccompanied to/from/within Italy, including Sicily, are required to obtain, in addition to the Air Malta UM policy, a Dichiarazzione Di Affido (Statement of Custody), signed by both parents and authorized by the Italian police before departure. This means that Italian passport holders under 14 years of age travelling as UM’s must be in possession of a Dichiarazione Di Affido duly stamped by the Italian police (questura). A copy of this document can be downloaded here (PDF 643KB).

For further details please contact Air Malta on telephone number +356 2299 9296.

Reservations for unaccompanied minors may be made with our International Call Centre, Air Malta sales offices or your travel agent. UM’s cannot be booked on line.
