Air Malta CEO AMITEX Speech – Thursday 3rd April 2014
Honourable Minister, Directors, Ladies and Gentlemen.
Welcome to AMITEX 2014, one of the most exciting events in the annual calendar for the Maltese travel trade. Over the next few days, Malta’s leading travel agents and tour operators will be providing expert advice and presenting outstanding offers for travel all around the world.
As the airline with the largest capacity serving Malta, Air Malta is proud to be the official airline for AMITEX and the leading partner for all the travel trade represented here.
This high level of cooperation with the trade has been built up over many years. In fact, this week we are celebrating two important anniversaries and milestones in the history of the Maltese travel trade: firstly, of course, the fortieth anniversary of Air Malta’s first flight and the 21st anniversary of AMITEX.
The Boeing 720B aircraft, used for the first flight to London Heathrow, proudly flew the Maltese eight-pointed cross, which rapidly became Malta’s most evident symbolic ambassador in Europe and beyond.
Over the past four decades, Malta has also developed as a dynamic and attractive destination for tourism and business. Air Malta has played a pivotal role, enabling this growth by providing convenient connections from our base at the crossroads of the Mediterranean.
Today we are working hard to secure the future for our airline in an extremely challenging market. We understand the need to continually renew and strengthen our co-operation with the Maltese travel trade; a valued partner at all times. This way we shall all succeed together.
In 1994, twenty years after our first flight, we organised the first AMITEX fair at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.
The industry has changed beyond recognition over time. You have adapted your businesses and introduced innovative products, as well as mastering the internet to stay ahead of the game. All of us at Air Malta salute you for creating such a vibrant market in our relatively small country.
AMITEX is a showcase of opportunity - an opportunity for Maltese travellers to plan their holidays with you … and of course with your airline of choice, Air Malta.
This summer we will be operating to 33 scheduled destinations with 165 weekly flights. New destinations this season include Venice and Parma.
As announced we have started operating to Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen Airport and will again operate a twice weekly service to Algiers. It’s great to see that some of you are already actively promoting these destinations.
We believe that Air Malta is the right choice for your customers as we offer a wide range of top destinations, a safe and comfortable flight and levels of customer service and care that low-cost carriers simply can’t match.
Leading Air Malta as it celebrates its 40th anniversary is an honour for me and I am committed to steer the airline in the next leg of its journey.
I trust that we can count on all of you as our brand ambassadors wherever you fly with us.
I wish to take the opportunity to thank our previous Minister, Karmenu Vella, for his guidance throughout the recent months. I also take the opportunity to welcome onboard Dr Edward Zammit Lewis, our new Minister of Tourism. I am sure that under his guidance Air Malta will continue to be a key player in the development of our tourism industry. On behalf of Air Malta I wish him all the best in his new portfolio.
Thank you for your support and I would like to wish you a most successful AMITEX 2014.
