The weather website Current Results has run the numbers on every major city in Europe and Valletta has shined through (excuse the pun) as being both the sunniest and the warmest. There literally is no better place in Europe to visit if you're looking to catch some golden rays! So if you're looking for a holiday steeped in culture in a beautiful, sun-drenched location, why not plan your holidays in Malta?
It comes as no surprise really, given that the city is located on a tiny oasis right in the middle of the Mediterranean. In fact the vast majority of the cities featured in the top 10 results are located close to the sea's warm shores. On a yearly basis, Malta's capital basks in an average of 2,957 hours of sunshine. To put his into perspective, London has an average of 1,410, making Valletta twice as sunny as England's capital. You don't need to be a meteorologist to know that Malta is sunnier than the UK but it's definitely interesting to see exactly how much sunnier it is. Being the sunniest city is one thing but Valletta has also topped the charts for being the warmest of Europe's cities too. On a yearly average Valletta experiences a high of 22.3°C and a low of 14.9°C. Best pack some shorts and t-shirts if you're planning a visit and don't forget your sunglasses!
Valletta, which is currently gearing up to become the European Capital of Culture in 2018, is a city that was built with the sun in mind. The whole city looks absolutely stunning with the warm Maltese sun shining down on it. The sandy browns of the grand Baroque buildings and the lush greens in the Upper and Lower Barrakka Gardens and Hastings Garden really stand out on a gloriously sunny day. The relaxed atmosphere of the pedestrianised streets are perfect to meander down on a warm day. The narrow side streets offer some shade from the sun while the many open squares are great to let it shine through. Even the city's iconic skyline, contrasting with the deep blue sky and its reflection on the clear waters, makes Valletta look absolutely irresistible.
A lot of the bars, cafes and restaurants have outside seating so why not take a break at one of the many picturesque locations around the city? Relax with a nice meal, a coffee or an ice-cold drink and soak up the beautiful sun-kissed backdrop of Europe's sunniest city.
