You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen, it said 'Parking Fine.' So that was nice.
Humour is most definitely infectious. The sound of roaring laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle, or sneeze. When laughter is shared, it seems to bind people together and increase happiness and intimacy for everyone involved. Laughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body. Humour and laughter has been proven to improve your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress.
It's very clear that having a good laugh is very important. So where in Malta can you go to be guaranteed a side splitting good time? I recently had the pleasure of meeting with Roberta and Gail, who run LOL Productions. Ironically enough, they take comedy seriously. Very seriously! In June 2004 Roberta and Gail organised their very first show. Being comedy lovers, the thought of only being able to watch stand-up comedy on DVD's and travelling abroad was not enough to satisfy their appetite for everything funny. This inspired them to create a change. Instead of travelling to the comedy, they should bring the comedy to Malta!
The hunt began to find an appropriate venue, set up a stage and find paying sponsors to "get us on track." Roberta and Gail found an agent based in the UK who they could trust, who nine years on, they are still using and finally a marketing plan was put into action. Once launched all that was left was to pray that the Maltese would show up on the night. They did.
Now their events run twice a year, always receiving positive feedback, and typically, filling every seat. They specifically chose a venue that is expandable so not to disappoint anyone and the dates are carefully selected to ensure that they don't clash with any other major events. One reason why LOL productions has been so successful is that they are very attentive towards their audience and carefully select the right acts to suit their tastes. LOL productions have now created some avid comedy followers and many more just love a good night of laughter. With comedians such as Terry Aldertin, Tim Vine, Milton Jones, Michael Winslow and recently Patrick Monahan to just name but a few, the good times are guaranteed!
The comedians seem to love coming to Malta too. Some remain a bit apprehensive performing to a new audience in a different country, but as soon as they get started they enjoy the gig and the response from the Maltese audience. Malta now has a reputation in the London comedy circuit for being very hospitable. They (obviously) love the weather and swimming is a must, regardless of the time of year! They are in awe of Malta's history and of course adore the local food.
So what does the future hold? More good times! Gail and Roberta have a massive wish list of comics that they want to bring to Malta. Issues arise occasionally with trying to fit within the comic's hectic lifestyles. With many of them touring or working on TV their availability at times can be limited but this does not put them off in the slightest. Malta can look forward to more top quality international stand-up comedy coming to its shores on a regular basis.
So when is the next show? More good news. You don't have to wait very long at all. LOL Productions’ next event is being held on the 5th and 6th October 2013 at the Dolmen Hotel in Qawra. It is being compered by Stuart Goldsmith who is one of London's top up and coming stand-up comics. Australian Felicity Ward who just finished a month at the Edinburgh Festival, where she received excellent reviews, will be performing on the night. The headliner act is an American called Dave Fulton who last year caused plenty of Brits to splutter over their cornflakes one morning when mistakenly uttering an expletive on BBC1's Breakfast Show.
This is a MUST SEE event for everybody's event calendar. You might need to arrange for a babysitter though as this one is just for the adults.
