Musical Events

Malta music eventsThe Malta Jazz Festival

With its warm summer nights, the Maltese Islands offer a busy cultural event calendar including renowned European festivals.

What could improve fireworks, a warm Mediterranean breeze, good food, and close friends? Live music – and there’s no shortage of it in Malta.

The Islands host a number of local and international events throughout the year and it’s the norm for these events to be hosted in some of the most stunning venues imaginable. Whether you’re into the smooth sound of Jazz, thumping beats of the latest chart toppers, or the complex arrangements of classical baroque, there’s a music event for you.

Malta’s three principle music events include the Malta Jazz Festival, Isle of MTV, and the BOV Opera Festival:

  • The Malta Jazz Festival is a yearly event bringing in some of the top names in contemporary jazz. The festival is held at Ta’ Liesse in Valletta – a stunning setting with views across the harbour including the magnificent Fort St. Angelo. To make the evening even more special, take a boat trip to the festival. Past artists included Al Di Meola, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, and many more.
  • Isle of MTV: What do Snoop Dogg, Flo Rida, Nelly Furtado, LMFAO, and Will.i.am have in common? They’ve all brought the house down at MTV’s annual Isle of MTV celebration on the old granaries just outside Valletta. A crowd of over 50,000 screaming fans gathers every year to welcome international music stars, and the line-up improves every year.
  • The BOV Opera Festival is another yearly event held in March featuring some of the most popular operatic performances. Set in one of Malta’s architectural gems – the Manoel theatre, past events include the likes of Gaetano Donizetti's masterpiece 'Lucia Di Lammermoor'.

If you have a chance, don’t miss Malta’s own world-class tenor – Joseph Calleja. This young star has won accolade after accolade and has been described as the world’s foremost tenor. His local concerts often include an eclectic mix of contemporary stars from the late Lucio Dalla to Michael Bolton.

Throughout the year (although mainly in the summer months), Malta plays host to international music stars of all genres. Past concerts included the likes of Brian Adams, Rod Stewart, Sting, Ronan Keating, Elton John, and more.

Finally, for the more traditional music lovers, Malta’s festas, held regularly throughout the summer months, always include a brass marching band and performances by local musicians. Many of the pieces played will be compositions by local maestros.
