Q - Can the free baggage allowance be pooled between passengers?

A - Yes, we allow the pooling of baggage, provided that passengers :

  • have presented themselves together at check-in
  • are travelling on the same flight
  • are travelling to the same final destination

Q- Can I transport golf clubs, other sports equipment and/or a bicycle on an Air Malta flight?

A – Essentially, yes you can. Click here for more details about the carriage of sports items.

Q - Am I allowed an extra baggage allowance for my diving equipment?

A – Yes. Click here for more details about the carriage of sports items.

Q - Can I take a surfboard or snowboard on a flight?

A - It depends on the dimensions of your board. Please contact us prior to booking.

Q - What is the maximum allowable size of hand baggage?

A - The maximum dimensions for a piece of hand baggage allowed on our flights are 18 cm x 45 cm x 50 cm.

Q - How many pieces of hand baggage is each passenger allowed?

A - Each passenger is allowed 1 piece of hand baggage, which must not exceed a weight of 8 kgs.

Q - What liability does Air Malta have for my baggage?

A - We will endeavour to trace any lost baggage within the earliest possible time. In the unlikely event of a bag remaining untraced after 21 days, we will initiate procedures to refund you with the cost of the lost bag and its contents. If a passenger is covered by personal travel insurance, the insurer should be contacted first. We are not liable for any minor damage suffered through normal wear-and-tear baggage handling.

Q - What do I need to do if I realise that my checked-in baggage has not arrived?

A - If you realise that your checked-in baggage has not arrived, please advise Air Malta or the Air Malta representative immediately. The Baggage Services desk is usually situated in the Baggage Reclaim area of an Arrivals Lounge.

You will need to present your flight ticket and the baggage receipts which were given to you at check-in for your journey. A Property Irregularity Report (PIR) should be filled in immediately and we will then start the process of tracing your missing baggage.

Once the lost-baggage details have been entered into our worldwide baggage tracing system, you can check on the status of the baggage search by visiting the Lost Baggage page on www.airmalta.com, or by clicking here.

Unless the correct baggage receipt is presented to us, we are not liable for any missing baggage. Nonetheless we will inform the departure airport about the matter.

Q - What should I do if I have lost or forgotten property on board an Air Malta plane?

A - Contact Air Malta or Air Malta’s representative in the Arrivals Hall as quickly as possible and provide them with your flight and seat numbers, and details of the missing property.

Please note that the earlier this is brought to our attention, the better your chances of retrieving the property, as the aircraft is cleaned as soon as you disembark and will take-off to another destination within 45 minutes.

If you realise after you have left the airport that you have forgotten some property on board the aircraft, please contact our Baggage Services Office in Malta on Tel : (+356) 2369 6063 / 6064 or email address.  Following this communication, we will do our utmost to retrieve the item/s concerned and we shall advise you if they are located.

Q - How long will it take before I can expect to receive a lost bag which was checked-in at my departure airport?

A - As soon as you fill in the Property Irregularity Report at the Arrivals Baggage Reclaim Area, we will send a tracer (electronic communication) to the flight’s point of origin. If the bag is traced immediately, it will be forwarded on the next available flight. If it is not traced immediately, a second tracer is sent to several destinations until a match is received. It will then be forwarded as soon as possible.

Q - Is there a specified time limit within which to register a claim for damage to baggage?

A - A baggage damage claim should be filed immediately. However, in exceptional circumstances, a claim for damaged baggage can be accepted within 7 days of arrival, as long as a correct baggage receipt is produced. The baggage receipt is given to you at check-in at your departure airport.

Q – Should I label my Baggage with my personal contact details?

A - Yes, this is thoroughly recommendable and it will help us to identify the bag as yours in the unlikely event that the check-in tag is torn off.

Q - Does Air Malta provide Baggage Labels?

A - Yes, baggage labels are available at all check-in counters.

Q - What is the maximum weight limit for a piece of checked-in baggage?

A – In compliance with Health & Safety requirements, we apply a maximum weight limit of 32 kgs for each individual piece of checked-in baggage. All baggage pieces in excess of 32 kgs will have to be re-packed in separate bags. Excess baggage charges will be levied, if applicable. Clearly, the free baggage allowance permitted to each passenger in accordance with his class of travel is included in these 32 kgs.

Q - What items should not be placed into baggage which is to be checked-in at the point of departure?

A – The following items should not be placed into checked-in baggage: money, jewellery, precious metals, computers, personal electronic devices, official documentation, securities or other valuables, business documents, passports and other identification documents, samples and any fragile or perishable items. We are not liable for the loss of any of these items.

We also recommend that medicines which you might require during the flight and any infants’ needs should be carried in your hand baggage.

Q - What items are not allowed to be carried as hand baggage?

A - No liquids of a capacity exceeding 100 ml, no sharp objects ( e.g. scissors, knives etc ) and no aerosols which can be considered as disabling devices. Safety matches and lighters must be carried on one’s person. Click here to see Air Malta’s security requirements and here to go to Dangerous Items in Baggage.

Q - What is the rate per kilo for Excess Baggage?

A  - We allow each person, including Infants, a free baggage allowance in accordance with their Class of travel. If your baggage exceeds this allowance, we will carry it on your flight at an additional charge. The charge will depend on the amount of extra baggage you are carrying, its weight / number of pieces, and also on your departure and arrival destinations.

In any event, in accordance with Health and Safety regulations, one individual item of baggage must not exceed a maximum weight of 32 kgs.

Excess baggage charges are calculated on a formula based on the points of departure and arrival. We cannot therefore list all the possible excess baggage charges here.

Please contact us at your point of departure if you would like us to calculate the exact cost of excess baggage to be transferred to the destination of your choice.

Q - I will be staying at my destination for an extended period. Is my free baggage allowance therefore increased?

A - No. If you think you will exceed your allowance, you should consider having some items shipped as Cargo. Click here to visit our Cargo Services page.

A – No. These contain a small amount of explosives which can be dangerous in a pressurised cabin.

Q - If I am travelling with Air Malta and then connecting with a further Air Malta flight or a flight operated by another carrier, can I check my bags in for carriage to my final destination?

A – You can label your baggage straight through to your final destination if :

  • you hold a ticket with a confirmed reservation for both journeys and
  • if the second airline you are travelling with has a baggage-handling agreement with Air Malta.

You must present your second ticket at check-in as proof of your onward journey.

Q - If my laptop is allowed as hand baggage, is it included in the limitation of hand baggage?

A - Yes, a laptop is considered as your 1 allowable piece of hand baggage, which must not exceed 5 kgs in weight. Click here for more details on the current security procedures.

Q - If my laptop is not allowed as hand baggage, how will it be carried during the flight?

A – We strongly advise you to carry your laptop only as hand baggage. We are not liable for a laptop if you opt to place it in your checked-in baggage.

Q - Where can I find information on restricted articles of hand baggage & items classified as dangerous goods?

A – Please click here for more details.

Q - Can I take a sporting gun with me on an Air Malta flight?

A - No weapon whatsoever can be carried as hand baggage and weapons will only be accepted for carriage in the aircraft hold as checked-in baggage.

In these cases, our passengers must :

  • make all necessary arrangements with the Police and Customs authorities prior to commencement of the journey
  • present all the necessary documentation and permits for the weapon
  • present themselves at check-in with the weapon, and escorted by a Police Officer

The flight Captain will be advised of the weapon and its location on the aircraft. Also, authorities at the arrival destination are similarly advised.

Q - Can I take a wedding dress on board an Air Malta aircraft as hand baggage?

A - We will do our utmost to accommodate this request. However, we cannot guarantee that a wedding dress will be allowed on board as hand baggage, due to the limitation of space on the aircraft. For more information contact our International Call Centre, Air Malta sales offices or your travel agent.  Extra seats cannot be booked online at www.airmalta.com.

However, due to space limitations on the aircraft, large instruments must be carried as checked-in baggage in the aircraft hold. Alternatively, by prior arrangement, you may purchase an extra seat to provide guaranteed extra space in the cabin.
