Surrounded by the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, the Maltese islands offer a great variety of Aquatic sports for people of all ages. Aquatic sport is offered by private companies located in most of the popular beaches like Golden Bay, Ghadira and Qawra all of which are located in the northern part of Malta.
One of the most superb experiences that you can enjoy is paragliding. You and your partner can be hooked onto an open parachute which is then attached to a very long rope tied to a speedboat on the other end. The speedboat leaves the bay at a great speed and you soar up in the skies, enjoying aerial views of the beach and its surroundings. You are then safely lowered into the sea and taken back on the beach.
Another common sport is water skiing though it requires more skill and practice. You hold on to a rope that is tied to a speedboat and wear a pair of skis very similar to the skis used for snow. As the speedboat picks up speed, you are lifted out of the deep blue sea and start skiing on top of it.
You can also rent wind surfers on windy days and sail your way over the waves from one side of the beach to the other. The most common place for windsurfing is Ghadira bay in Mellieha. Like water skiing, wind surfing does require some skill and practice and also strength in your arms.
For those who do not have these particular skills or have no time to learn, there are jet skis available for hire. You can rent them for 20 minute intervals. Most jet skis can hold two persons at one time and are very safe to use so even children can ride together with their parents. The feeling of riding a bike over the waves is incredible and is surely worth a go once you are here in Malta.
For those less adventurous or families with young children, paddleboats and canoes are also available for rent in most beaches. You can paddle out of Golden Bay and visit the neighbouring beaches of Gnejna and Riviera.
In Ghadira you will also find an Aqua Activity Park which is great fun for the whole family. This floating park in the middle of the bay offers springboards for jumping, floating rocks for climbing, bouncy rides and other activities ideal for people of all ages.
Another aquatic sport which is worth mentioning is diving. For those who do not own a PADI certificate, beginners’ dives are organised by most diving schools on a daily basis. You will get a brief lesson in shallow waters and then move on with an experienced diver to deeper and more interesting seas. These dives usually do not exceed 12 meters and take around 40 minutes. It is a great opportunity to see what lies under the clear sea surrounding the Maltese Islands.
For all the sports mentioned above except for diving, the renting companies provide life jackets which should be worn at all times for safety reasons. So be prepared to enjoy a boost of adrenalin while here in Malta. All you need is a bathing suit and a wish to have fun.
